These two teams, that once played in the Big East together, ended this season in different ways. Needing 2 wins to become Bowl eligible, Virginia Tech just about got it done, while Rutgers slumped to losses in it's last 2 to miss out on the Big East Championship and as a result a BCS berth. Who comes into this more motivated? It might just be Virginia Tech.

Rutgers dropped their final game to Louisville and now have to make do with this Bowl game down in Florida. V.Tech will be chuffed to be in a Bowl game, as they worked hard for it, beating Boston in OT before besting Virginia with a last second FG in the regular season finale. Motivation should be with V.Tech, but Rutgers are meeting their rivals after ages, and here's why I think they play hard. Rutgers had a 3-11 record against V.Tech in conference play, with their last win coming in 1992! Since then, V.Tech won 11 straight meetings, and of course they haven't met since the Hokies jumped to the ACC.

Rutgers QB Nova will want to atone for his interception on the last play of the regular season. He threw 13 of his 15 picks this season in the final 6 games, and has to make up for it. RB Jamison was also crocked by injury but is better again, meaning he should do much more than he did in the final few games. Certainly, the early season performances suggest he can do.

The defence is where there is a serious mismatch. I realise V.Tech are scoring on average 3 or 4 points more than Rutgers but the defence for Ruttgers, which ranks 14th in yardage allowed and 4th in the country in points allowed, just 14, are a whole 10 points better than the Hokies stop unit. That will be the difference here.

BETTING VERDICT

I think Rutgers cover the 2 point spread. Heck, I think they take this one outright. But, I want a bet I don't have to worry about at all, so will go for a 7 point teaser of 2 teams, the other being Texas Tech.
