Both teams ended the season poorly, losing a bunch of games. Texas Tech lost 4 of their last 5 to end 7-5 while Minnesota went a terrible 2-6 in Big Ten play and lost their final 2 games of the season to finish 6-6, sneaking into a Bowl game.
While Texas Tech did give up a bunch of points in several games, they did have some very good defensive performances, and that matches up well against a Minnesota side that hasn't quite worked out who they want as QB. Bit late now. Nelson and Shortell were both used, and as a result the team has not gelled offensively, so the pressure came onto RB Donnell Kirkwood, meaning this team might be easier to figure out.
Texas Tech are an offensive juggernaut, with a history of producing excellent play from QB. Seth Doege completed over 70% of his passes, ranking 6th in the country with 3,934 yards and 2nd with 38 TDs! The team were pissed off when coach Tommy Tuberville left them after the regular season to go to Cincinnati, and they will want to take their anger out in front of a Texas crowd. Also, they are looking to impress the man who has taken over, Texas Tech legend Kliff Kingsbury, the 2nd leading passer in Texas Tech history.
Behind the excellent passing and receiving play of Texas Tech, they also boast a strong running game, averaging 5 yards per carry. Offensively, they will have too much for Minnesota, who may well give up 35-40 points against a pissed off team that wants to prove they should not have been left by their manager. They scored over 41 in 7 games this season, putting up an average of about 38 points.
BETTING VERDICT
The spread is set at 13, and I'm going to take Texas Tech to win and cover that number in what could well be a whitewash over the Gophers.
