PREVIEW
So Western Kentucky have made it to a Bowl game for the first time in their history, and they get to play it at Ford Field against the Central Michigan Chippewas. I have a feeling the Hilltoppers are going to struggle even though they are favourites of almost a touchdown.
Both teams went 4-4 in their conferences, Central Michigan in the MAC and Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt. Western Kentucky went 7-5 for the season while Central Michigan were 6-4, but it is crucial to look at recent form coming into this game, because it is central Michigan who have the momentum. The Chippewas, who have played this Bowl game 3 times previously, won 3 straight games to end the season, scoring a bunch behind great play for MAC's 3rd best QB Ryan Radcliff, and RB Zurlon Tipton, a Detroit local, who is on a run of 6 straight games with 110 yards rushing or more!
As for Western Kentucky, while the season's defence looks better, averaging 26 surrendered to Central Michigans 33, they gave up 30 or more points in 4 of their last 6 games, going 2-4 to end the season as the slumped. Remember, this side managed just 4 wins in total in the last 3 years combined, so it's very much an improving team, but not one that is to be relied on heavily, certainly not at this stage of the season when they are clearly knackered. Also, there was a change of coach, with former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino coming in just a couple of weeks back.
Indeed, on average, Central Michigan scored more points than Western Kentucky, and with the Hilltoppers on a late season slide, that could well happen again here. Antonio Andrews, the Western Kentucky RB is the only true dangerman in this one, but it gets negated because the rest of the team aren't up to scratch from what I've seen in their last few games.
I have a feeling the defensive game may well be the decider here, but on offence it is Central Michigan that gets my vote.
BETTING VERDICT
Tough decision here because I really think the Hilltoppers are slumping and I fancy Central Michigan to win outright. However, Western Kentucky's defence have been decent and the rest might have them performing here.
I think I'll take the less risky option and simply take the points with Central Michigan in a game I think they could win outright.
