Preview
These two Sun Belt Conference foes will end the season against one another with one of the schools already booked into a Bowl game and the other not going to be doing so. The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (7-4) won't be winning this Conference, but they will be in playing in a Bowl game, while the Florida Atlantic Owls (3-8) are just trying to end the season in a positive manner.
It will be tough for the Florida Atlantic Defense in this game as they are going to face a dual-threat Quarter Back in Terrance Broadway. That has helped the Louisiana Offense to 5.1 yards per carry this season and he should help the team have their way on the ground in this one. The Owls are allowing 4.7 yards per carry and have given up almost 200 yards per game on the ground.
With the running game established, it should be possible for Louisiana to also throw the ball despite that being the strength of the Florida Atlantic Defense. The Owls just don't get enough pressure on the Quarter Back to think they will pressure Broadway enough to cause him to make mistakes and slow down drives.
The only thing that is preventing Louisiana from winning the Sun Belt Conference is their poor Defensive performances and that is an area that Florida Atlantic should have some success exposing. However, the Owls have struggled to run the ball effectively all season with just 3.1 yards per carry and the Ragin Cajuns should be able to shut them down somewhat on that front.
Graham Wilbert will therefore have to be at his best from the Quarter Back position and he has put together a good season to suggest he will have some success against this Defense. Wilbert has only thrown 4 interceptions with his 16 touchdown passes, but he could have some issues escaping the pass rush behind an Offensive Line that allows 2.4 sacks per game.
Head to Head
Louisiana beat Florida Atlantic by 3 points at home last season, although it is the Owls that have a 5-2 series record.
Florida Atlantic have won their last 2 home games against the Ragin Cajuns.
Prediction
Florida Atlantic will likely keep up with Louisiana for much of the game, but I think the road team will eventually pull away from them and cover the spread.
I just think the Owls are a little one-dimensional with their Offense and that is what will make the difference by the end of the game in this one.
The Pick :
Florida Atlantic 24-34 Louisiana Ragin Cajuns
Gooner’s Statistical Value Bet
