PREVIEW

Cincinnati wil play this home game at a neutral venue, FedEx Field in Maryland, with a financial incentive that helps them build a new athletic centre. Anyway, it helps that their opponents, the Virginia Tech Hokies, are 0-2 in this venue under the current coach.

Virginia Tech and Cincinnati have 1 common opponent at this stage, Pittsburgh. That is how this game is being capped a fair bit, and it is telling that then winless Pittsburgh thumped then #13 Virginia Tech 35-17. That same Pittsburgh were dismantled by Cincinnati 34-10 in Week 1. Big, big difference. It should not be taken lightly either, because Cincinnati's defence has been great, with opponents scoring exactly 0 against them in the 1st half combined!

Cincinnati's defence is giving up just 17 points and 676 of total yards in their first 2 games combined, and they are 2-0 and coming off a bye week where they have been preparing for this match. Virginia Tech are 2-1 thanks to that loss to Pittsburgh, although they did regroup to beat Bowling Green 37-0. That shutout win is the reason V. Tech are being made favourites of almost 7 points here, and I disagree with it.

Fingers will be pointed at Cincinnati's QB Munchie Legaux, who threw 2 interceptions in his last match against an FCS opponent, but I think this was a letdown spot at the drop in competition, who they dominated in the 1st half before taking their foot off the pedal. In contrast, V. Tech QB Logan Thomas has already thrown 4 interceptions, and went just 11 for 26 and just 144 yards against Bowling Green.

Legaux has been great with the pass and the rush, gaining 413 through the air and 142 on the ground in just 2 games. He is also completing 62% of his passes while Thomas is only completing 52%, a massive difference.

I think the oddsmaker are expecting too much from the V. Tech rushing attack, which is the only thing I believe they have going for them to win this match. However, with V. Tech managing just 5.5 yards per play and the offence ranking 90th, I think they're being overrated.

BETTING VERDICT

I see this being decided by a FG as the defences should kick in and stop drives. Let's go with the underdogs and the points.
