BYU tumbled out of the rankings last week when they were beaten by state rivals Utah. BYU are now 2-1 for the season, having been shocked in that 24-21 finish at Utah, missing 2 makeable FGs towards the end of the game.
Boise State are 1-1, but it's fair as they faced Michigan State in the opener, and there is no shame in losing 17-13 on the road there. After an early bye week they rebounded and thumped Miami-Ohio 39-12 last weekend to bounce back into the top 25.
BYU had previously beaten Washington State and Weber State, scoring 75 points and conceding just 19, but they could not get it done last week and I have to question how they will do again on the road here.
BYU may have lost a close one, having 2 attempts at a FG from 51 yards and then immediately after from a makeable 36 yards but fluffed their chance. They were actually 24-7 down going into the 4th quarter, so had been outplayed. Riley Nelson, their QB, was sacked 4 times and intercepted once, so they're not protecting him much.
On the other hand, Boise State have yet to allow a sack, so even though BYU are good in that department, it won't be easy here in Idaho. Their decent rushing stop unit will be more than tested by DJ Harper, who racked up 162 yards on the ground against Miami-Ohio and had 3 rushing TDs and 1 TD reception. QB Joe Southwick threw for 304 yards and 2 scores, and actually finished in amazing fashion, completing all but 1 of his final 17 passes.
Kellen Moore may be gone but this team is in good hands. Coach Peterson has overseen great starts to his teams season, with Boise State going 19-1 in September under him. The only weakness I have spotted from Boise, is their rush defence, but I wonder if BYU can do enough damage there to cover the spread, let alone win.
