National champions Alabama are in action, entertaining Western Kentucky. Nick Sabans side are ranked #1 and they are at home, so they will surely want to impress the raucous crowd.
This teams potency cannot be understated. I went against them in last years final, thinking LSU could do something. LSU weren't allowed a single point in that blowout. Last week, in their opener Alabama thrashed #8 Michigan 41-14!
Austin Peay were rolled over 49-10 by Western Kentucky to give them their 1-0 start to the season, but this is the first time they've started the season with a win in, like, 7 years! There is history between these two sides, meeting in 2008, where Alabama walked out winners by a 41-7 score. That's the difference between the two programs.
Those of you that seriously follow the sport will point out the departures from the Alabama outfit, and while that is true, I must make clear those were mostly all in defence. This offence is still just as scary as it was last year. Trent Richardson, last years Heismann contender is gone, but then the rushing corps still managed to gash the 8th ranked Michgan defence for 232 yards!
The defence can still do their job well, recording 3 interceptions last week against the Wolverines, including one that was returned for a TD. Western Kentucky are going to come back down to earth with a great big bump when they go to Tuscaloosa.
This is the home opener for the National Champions. You think they start by going easy, even with Arkansas next on board? No chance. Expect a riotous 1st quarter, which sets the tone for the rest of the evening. A long one if you're a Hilltopper.
BETTING VERDICT
Alabama it has to be, but I'll take them on the spread to nail the 1st quarter.
