PREVIEW
Who's ready for some football?
The new season kicks off, as usual, with the Superbowl champions in action. The New York Giants are at home to host bitter rivals the Dallas Cowboys, whom they played in the final game of last seasons regular season.
The Giants are favourites of just 4 points, and after the way they knocked out the Green Bay Packers before edging the San Francisco 49ers and then upsetting the New England Patriots in last years final, it would seem at first glance they are the right pick. After all, they have bossed Dallas in recent games, beating them in 5 of their last 6 meetings. I'm not convinced.
Dallas finished just 1 game behind New York last year, so they are capable. New York went 9-7 but of course everyone will be thinking of the Giants topping the Packers and the Patriots and also that 31-14 beating they laid on the Cowboys. But think back to the previous meeting last year, where Dallas were leading by 12 points before giving up 2 TDs in the last 3 and a bit minutes to lose 37-34. Make no mistake, Dallas can give New York a hell of a game, and the outright win is not a crazy idea.
Romo actually had success throwing the ball against New York last season, hitting 6 TD passes and going for 610 passing yards. Michael Coe and he have good chemistry so look for him if considering "to score a TD" bets. Also keep an eye on DeMarco Murray, who is a quality young RB who may well plough through the New York defence for points.
That New York defence is dealing with a number of injuries coming into this season opener, and they are going to get hit hard by a pissed off rival opponent that is itching to make up for their recent losses in this fixture.
The Giants will be missing Terrell Thomas, Prince Amukamara, Chris Canty, Shaun Rogers and Marvin Austin and besides, I still think the Cowboys offence, passing and rushing, is being underestimated. You don't put up 34 points last year against the Superbowl champions by being rubbish. New York will likely be given as tough a fight as last years first meeting and that was decided by just 3 points.
BETTING VERDICT
New York may well win this, but I think Dallas will be ahead at stages in the 2nd half.
If you're feeling bold, take a bit of Dallas on the ML but ATS it has to be the Cowboys, who will come here full of motivation and, more importantly, ability.
