Boise State went 12-1 in the WAC last year and followed that up with a 26-3 thumping of Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. They are now in the MWC, and open their season with a non-conference match-up against Georgia, who play in the SEC. The match is being played at a neutral location so Georgia will not have home advantage, although the support will be great as it is being held in Atlanta.
Coach Chris Peterson continues to do an amazing job with this Broncos team, and he will have his key man here, QB Kellen Moore. Moore has a passing efficiency of almost 167 and 38 wins, both records for a quarterback. He also has a completion percentage of almost 70 and has thrown for almost 11,000 yards in his career. Sick.
Titus Young and Austin Pettis are both gone but their receiving boots can be ably filled by Matt Miller and Mitch Burroughs. Tyler Shoemaker and Kyle Efaw are two more to keep an eye on when the Boise offence is doing his thing. On the ground, look for RB Doug Martin to do some damage. The senior had 201 carries last season for 1,260 yards, which was a career best for him.
While Boise stay hot, and make the move up in conference to try and get themselves into the National Championship game, Georgia continue to fade. The Bulldogs have beaten Boise State in their only meeting, back in 2005 but since then Georgia have finished each season with less wins than the previous season. 11 wins in 2007 to tie for first in the SEC, then down to 10 wins, then 8 wins and last year they managed just 6 wins. Georgia is a team in decline, make no mistake.
Georgia QB Aaron Murray did quite well last season, posting very impressive numbers. The freshman threw for over 3,000 yards with an efficiency rating of almost 155 making him the best freshman QB last year. However, he will now face a rabid Boise State defence that ranked 2nd last year in points and yards allowed. Boise State were ranked 1st for sacks and if they perform like they did last season, Murray is in for a long night.
The Georgia defence will be missing Akeem Dent and Justin Houston, who went to the NFL. Christian Robinson and Cornelius Washington will try and fill their boots but I'm not so sure how they can shut down Moore, who is now in his final year.
BETTING VERDICT
Boise have made the move for a reason. They want the recognition they deserve after going 61-5 run! It might not be a white-wash but I see the Broncos starting the season with a win.
