Things have gone really wrong for Arizona as they are currently on a 2-6 slide that leaves them with a 9-9 record. Still, it's better than the Phillies, who are just 8-10. Philadelphia snapped out of their funk yesterday with some big hitting, bashing out a season best 8 runs to win 8-5. Nix, Vicotrino and Pence all went long with the ball, and that was encouraging for a side that is ranked 3rd last in the MLB in runs scored. They won't have it easy today though.
The Philadelhia Phillies send out southpaw Cole Hamels today. He is 2-1 with a 2.95ERA and he seems to be getting better with every start. Against the San Diego Padres, Hamels threw 61 strikes, which is amazing considering he only threw 92 pitches in total. He did that in 6 innings, and that can only happen when you are in total control of your work. He should have success carrying that form over here, because not only are Arizona suddenly struggling, they have not won many against Hamels. Hamels is 3-1 in his career against the Diamondbacks with a 3.72ERA.
The Arizona Diamondbacks go with Trevor Cahill, who is 1-1 with a 2.84ERA. Looking at stats on official pages I see batters are hitting just .197 against Cahill, so you know he's taken the loss because his offence isn't helping him out. Against Atlanta his defence let him down, and he will need a better performance from them if he is to do well here. Cahill has faced the Phillies once before, allowing 1 run over almost 8 innings.
The Phillies bats are warming up a bit. Yesterday they hit .324 as a team. Pierre has 18 hits so far for his team and is batting .333, while 1st baseman Wigginton has hit the ball in 7 straight games now, batting .360. There won't be as many runs scored today as yesterday, but with Hamels pitching the Phillies always have a chance as they should keep Arizona fairly quiet.
