Analysis:

The last time that Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League some 11 years ago they came back strongly in their domestic league and won the double. Now after their European exit the eyes of the world will want to see if United still has the hunger and determination to succeed in the Carling Cup.

Just for the record, The Red Devils did reached the semi-finals last season and Sir ASlex Ferguson will expect nothing less than his boys to reach the final to be held at the Cardiff Millenium Stadium next year.

No doubt youngsters the likes of Giuseppe Rossi, Phil Bardsley and Gerard Pique will start this match but we will also see Captain Gary Neville starting this match in defence. In attack we can see Louis Saha given the starting nod in place of Nistelrooy partnering Rossi. We can also expect to see Kieron Richardson given a chance to impress here.

Birmingham on the other hand were simply outclassed by Manchester City when they were beaten 4-1 last Saturday have recalled the services of goalkeeper Colin Doyle from Milwall as a cover to Maik Taylor. Nico Vaesen is suspended following his sending off last Saturday.

David Dunn is likely to be rested after he was substituted as he is suffering from a thigh injury. Stve Bruce is likely to bring on Jermaine Pennant to start this match and hope the on loan Arsenal player can cause the United defence trouble here.

However Steve Bruce as a former United player has never been on the winning side against his former club and I will go for that record to stand and take United and give the 1 ball here.
