MLB Betting – Red Sox, Yankees Battle For East Lead
Baseball: United States, MLB
Thursday, August 6th, 7:05 PM ET
There will be plenty of exciting MLB betting on Thursday night as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will get together in New York.
The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is the biggest in all of baseball. Both teams are jockeying for position in the East and this upcoming series will be very important to both.
Boston Red Sox (62-43 overall - 27-26 road)
While most people in Boston are already giving their attention to the NFL odds and the New England Patriots, since the NFL training camps have commenced, but the Red Sox could be Championship-bound themselves.
They’ll send John Smoltz to the mound on Thursday and Smoltz has struggled since joining the Red Sox. He’s 2-4 with a 7.12 ERA and I’m betting management was hoping for better production than this.
Smoltz has given up 17 earned runs in his last 17.2 innings pitched, which is atrocious. He’s not worth backing right now.
New York Yankees (64-42 overall – 35-17 home)
The Yankees have been much better at home than on the road this year but interestingly enough, their starter on Thursday has not.
Joba Chamberlain is 5-0 with a 2.78 ERA on the road but he has struggled at New Yankee Stadium so far. At home this year, he’s had 11 starts and he’s just 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA.
The bigger issue for Chamberlain has been his control at home. He’s allowed 52 hits on the road and just 53 at home, opposing hitters are batting .254 against home both at home and on the road, but he’s given up 14 more walks at home than he has on the road. Putting those extra runners on base has inflated his earned run average at home.
The Betting Verdict
Expect Smoltz to take a beating on Thursday night. Not only do the Yankees have one of the most potent lineups in all of baseball, they also have one of the worst stadiums for pitchers.
Balls have been flying out of Yankee Stadium at record pace and Smoltz gave up six home runs in July in just 27.2 innings pitched, he’s sure to get pounded on Thursday.
The Yankees are the betting pick and don’t be surprised if it’s a high scoring affair.
