Bayern Munich Close In On First Leg of Treble
FC Bayern Munich face the first hurdle in a potential treble of trophies when they face Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Pokal (German Cup) final on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
With just five games remaining the Bavarians hold a comfortable ten point lead atop the Bundesliga, and are through to the last four of the UEFA Cup, so victory on Saturday will see them well on their way to adding three pieces of silverware to their trophy cabinet.
Coincidentally, these sides met last weekend in a dress rehearsal at the Allianz Arena, where on the strength of Bayern’s 5-0 hammering of Dortmund, PinnacleSports.com have priced Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side as short as 1.31 to lift the famous jeweled trophy for a record 14th time.
Luca Toni, the Bundesliga’s top goal scorer bagged two goals in that game making it six from his last three outings, including another brace in Wednesday night’s 3-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt. ‘Il Bomber’ - as he is now affectionately known - will again be a huge threat to Borussia’s back-line, although there are some doubts about the fitness of his strike-partner, Miroslav Klose, who has had hip problems and sat out Bayern’s last two games.
Even if Klose is unavailable, Bayern Munich possess strength in depth through their entire squad, which presents a real headache for Thomas Doll, Borussia’s coach, as he looks to guide Dortmund to the third German Cup win in the club’s history. Although BVB have excelled in the Cup, their recent Bundesliga form has been patchy at best.
Dortmund could be excused last weekend’s mauling with their minds on the final, but Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat by Hannover is hardly the best preparation for the Cup final.
Borussia have been victorious in just one of their last eight league games and have been unable to keep a clean sheet in any of these. On that basis PinnacleSports.com price Bayern Munich as strong favorites to win in the 90 minutes.
THE VERDICT
Bayern's absence from the Champions League this season seems to have made them determined to claim a domestic "double" in Germany to underline their credentails as Germany's best side.
I think that Bayern Munich will win the Cup with some comfort.
