Brazil
If Brazil win this match they have safely navigated to the semi finals, and the pressure will be ever so slightly released for them.
There are large and violent demonstrations outside the stadiums as the locals are protesting at the huge cost the country has had to bare building these new stadiums for this tournament and the World Cup next year.
The anger is not directed at the team, but the government/officials that are suspected (and has long history of) of taking kickbacks.
Scolari getting the Brazil team to the Finals may just be the feel good factor that Brazil needs at the moment.
Again Scolari has a full contingent to chose from, importantly Neymar, who was substituted against Japan as a precaution, is fit. I think he will start with the same lineup as Japan, as he tries to get this team to gel.
Brazil were not totally convincing against Japan last time out, and the 3rd goal coming in the 3rd minute of extra time flattered the score line in my opinion.
But having said that, under Scolari the team is averaging 3.3 goals a game! (8 games)
Mexico
Mexico must be gutted having lost to Italy, and they know they are on the back foot to escape the group. A draw would give them hope, but a win in this game and the one against Japan on Saturday is the realistically what is needed to make it to the semis.
It’s a tall ask, but Mexico have a belief when it comes to Brazil, and actually have a good record against them recently. No country in international football has beaten Brazil more times since the turn of the century than Mexico, who have actually won six of their last 11 contests.
So what does Head coach Jose de la Torre need to do differently from the opening game, I think he is not going to do anything different.
He most likely will start with the same 11, and play the counter attack, and hopefully with the belief the team has when playing Brazil, the players will not get muscled off the ball like they did against Italy. He does have the striker Aldo de Nigris on the bench if needed.
Pressure playing Brazil, Mexico did not think so when they won gold and reduced Brazil to silver at the Olympics last year!
The Betting Verdict
Brazil will score, so that means Mexico have to score or they are out.
It's possibly flawed logic, but even with Mexico’s goal drought of late, I see this being a ding dong battle and goals a plenty.
p.s. Howard Webb is refereeing, so expect him to see a penalty in there somewhere !
The Pick :
Brazil 2 - Mexico 2
