WEST BROM
It’s a strangely anti-climatical end of this season’s Premiership compared to last season’s last day dramas as both the league title and relegation have already been settled prior to Sunday’s fixtures.
The Hawthorns will be the scene for Alex Ferguson’s last match in charge of his beloved Manchester United team and it’s sure to be an emotional farewell to his players, fans and football in general although he’ll be continuing on at Old Trafford in an ambassador role for the club. West Brom themselves have had a fantastic season too as they look to hold onto 8th place which is a great achievement for them and manager Steve Clarke.
However, Clarke will be keen for his squad to focus on this last match particularly against a strong United side as The Baggies have succumbed to three defeats in their last three matches with losses against Wigan Athletic (2-3 at home), Manchester City (away 0-1) and another away defeat at Norwich City last weekend 0-4 which sealed Norwich City’s tenure in the top flight for another season.
In fact, West Brom have won just once in their last eight matches which was a slightly surprising 3-0 win at Southampton but further defeats against West Ham and Arsenal cost them an outside chance of attaining a European berth. West Brom’s home record has also been slightly dented as a result which now stands at 9-3-6 27/20 but clean sheets have been a problem in their last nine on home soil.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Title holders Manchester United will no doubt be keen to end their season on a high and give Fergie the appropriate send-off so I daresay it’ll be business as usual for the next 90 minutes.
Manchester United have lost just twice in their last 23 matches which were defeats against arch-rivals Manchester City and Chelsea with both losses surprisingly coming at Old Trafford.
However, away from home, United’s form has been exemplary having now gone eleven matches unbeaten on the road with an overall away record of 12-4-2 36/19 and they have also won the most away matches this season in the division. In addition, they’ve failed to score on just two occasions on their travels so far this season and I expect the net to bulge again at The Hawthorns this Sunday in their favour.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
In summary, it’s a bigger day for Manchester United than West Brom even though the match is a home game for The Baggies and I’m expecting the Red Devils to record one last win for their great servant of the club.
A 2-0 win for United looks on the cards.
