2013-05-04 - West Brom vs Wigan Athletic
A Sports Betting Pick by Auls
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 4 May 2013 - Kick Off 3pm
West Brom
They may not have a lot to play for at the end of this season, but West Brom will have been very satisfied with their 0-3 win at Southampton last weekend. The Baggies are already in a strong position to finish in the top half of the Premier League table, although Steve Clarke will be happy to have seen his side stop a run of games without a win.
West Brom are 8th in the Premier League table and they are just 2 points away from guaranteeing a place in the top half of the table. They have been solid at home for much of this season and have a 9-3-5 record at the Hawthornes, scoring 25 goals and conceding 17.
Before the win at Southampton last weekend, West Brom had failed to win any of their previous 4 Premier League games and had earned just 2 points from a possible 12 in that run. They have only lost 1 of their last 4 home games in the League, although West Brom have only won 2 of their last 8 games here in all competitions.
Chris Brunt and Goran Popov are injured while Marc-Antoine Fortune begins a suspension. Youssouf Mulumbu is back from a suspension of his own.
Wigan Athletic
I don't think there would have been too many people in Wigan that would have felt Aston Villa's 6-1 win over Sunderland on Monday night was good for Wigan Athletic football club. However, one such man was Roberto Martinez who feels it has dragged a number of teams back into a relegation battle, but all of this will be a moot point if Wigan don't start winning games.
The win for Villa on Monday night means Wigan Athletic are in the final relegation zone and now 5 points behind the likes of Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle United. Even with a game in hand over those teams, it looks a big gap for Wigan to overcome if they don't start winning games. They bring in a 4-3-10 away record from their games in the Premier League, scoring 17 goals and conceding 28.
Wigan Athletic may be playing in the FA Cup Final next weekend, but they have failed to win any of their 3 League games since booking their place at Wembley and have 1 point from a possible 9. In fact, Wigan have failed to win any of their last 4 games in the Premier League thanks to Tottenham Hotspur grabbing late equaliser last weekend. The Latics have won just 1 of their last 7 away games in the Premier League.
Maynor Figueroa has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Antolin Alcaraz is also missing.
Head to Head
West Brom beat Wigan Athletic 1-2 at the DW Stadium earlier this season.
However, Wigan have only lost 1 of their last 4 visits to this part of the Midlands and they have won 2 of those games including a 1-2 win last season.
Prediction
This is usually the time when Wigan Athletic get themselves out of trouble and they are getting close to a desperation point with a 5 point gap between themselves and safety.
However, recent games have all seen Wigan create a lot of chances and I think they have every chance of picking up what could be a vital three points here and I think they are worth a small interest in this match.
