Chievo (13th W11 D6 L16)
Chievo recorded their fifth away victory of the season against Siena last weekend to extend their lead over the bottom three to a comfortable 10 points.
The Flying Donkeys will now play back to back home games against Genoa and Cagliari, so a win in any of these two matches could secure their presence in the top flight for the upcoming season as well.
Captain Sergio Pellissier scored the only goal in Siena and looks fully recovered, which means that he’ll probably partner Cyril Thereau up front in Chievo’s attack.
Coach Corini will have to deal with the absence of two of his defenders, both Cesar and Frey are suspended. Under these circumstances we’ll probably see Francesco Acerbi in Chievo’s defensive trio.
Genoa (19th W6 D11 L16)
Genoa missed another great opportunity to climb out from the bottom three places as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta last weekend at the Luigi Ferraris.
It was Genoa’s third consecutive home draw against teams from the bottom half of the table. Genoa is still there within a point from safety, but all these dropped points could cost them in the end.
Genoa will now travel to Chievo hoping to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat on the road, we have to go all the way back to November to find their last away success, a 1-0 win over Atalanta.
The most important absence for coach Ballardini will be midfielder’s Juraj Kucka, the Slovakian will miss this one out through injury. Daniele Portanova will also miss this trip, he is suspended.
The Betting Verdict
Chievo holds a solid W6 D6 L4 home record this season, all those defeats occurred against high profile sides like AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan and Lazio.
Playing in Chievo is always difficult, but Genoa can’t afford to lose ground against their relegation contenders at this point of the season, so they’ll need to return home with a positive result from this match.
It’s interesting that the three sides fighting for the 17th place have rarely lost recently, Siena, Palermo and Genoa combined have only lost four of their last fifteen Serie A games.
It’s hard to believe that Genoa will pick up all points here no matter how desperate they are for points, but I think they should be capable to at least avoid defeat against a Chievo side that would surely be satisfied with a draw.
