BETTING PREVIEW
Tottenham's season is fast unravelling as they continue to drop points in the Premier League week after week. I think they crash out of the Europa League tonight.
Tottenham had built a fantastic lead over Inter Milan at home in the last round, but came apart when they went to Italy, thrashed and just about scraping through in the end on away goals. They've been conceding in all games recently, almost beaten by Everton on the weekend, who came from behind after Adebayors early opener, and just denied by a late Spurs goal.
Tottenham's problems, I believe, are now psychological, and that is curtains. They choked and blew a quite amazing lead in the league last year when 13 points clear of Arsenal, and now they've done it again, with a position over their rivals, and a European spot, out of their hands even if they ran the rest of their fixture list.
Here too, the thumping at Inter will be playing on their minds heavily, for Basel are a team that last year beat Bayern Munich, and this year scored quickly to go 2-0 up before Tottenham somehow got a draw. They need a win here, and I think that will require a bare minimum of 2 goals, something I feel Basel will not allow for a 2nd game running against Tottenham. Bear in mind, Basel have been defensively brilliant in this competition, allowing just 4 goals in their last 8 Europa League games, including the 2 in the last leg.
THE BETTING VERDICT
Basel could go through with even a low scoring draw, so I'm not going to back them to win as they will be more than happy to keep defending at 0-0. A better bet is to take the hosts to simply qualify, which I feel they will do.
The Pick :
Basel 1-1 Tottenham
