Oxford United will be looking to extend their four match unbeaten run when Rotherham United visit the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday night to keep their slim chances of a play-off place alive.

A few weeks ago it seemed almost impossible for Oxford United to even think about a place in the top seven but back-to-back recent wins over the top two teams in the division, 1-0 at Gillingham and a 2-1 home win over Port Vale at the weekend has certainly given them renewed belief. They are currently eight points behind tonight’s opponents Rotherham United who occupy the last play-off spot, but a win for The U’s tonight would close the gap to just five points.

Oxford’s home record is 7-5-5 24/20 and they’ve already dealt with the likes of Northampton Town 2-1, Cheltenham Town 1-0 and Port Vale 2-1 as well as holding league leaders Gillingham to a 0-0 draw back in October and Burton Albion to a 1-1 draw in January, so they won’t be daunted by a visit from Rotherham United.

ROTHERHAM UNITED

Following back-to-back draws against York City and Southend United, visitors Rotherham United are in danger of slipping out of the play-off pack unless they get something at Oxford United on Tuesday night.

Despite being six points clear of their nearest rivals Southend United and Fleetwood Town who are both on 51 points each, Rotherham will be keen to extend their five match unbeaten run and continue this current period of stability following a run of just one win from four matches beforehand.

Recent wins over Torquay United, Chesterfield and Bristol Rovers have retained their play-off status and they’ve lost just once in their last eight away from home which was an understandable 0-2 loss at third placed Burton Albion. The Millers’ away record currently stands at 7-5-4 20/22 and they’ve really picked up their away performances in recent weeks but I get a feeling they might find things tough going at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday night.

THE BETTING VERDICT:

Oxford United have the home crowd behind them tonight with a faint sniff of a play-off place particularly if they beat tonight’s opponents. They have also performed well against top opposition lately too so I’ll back the hosts with the round ball for insurance. Oxford might even steal this one perhaps 2-1 as well.
