CHELTENHAM TOWN
Cheltenham Town could jump into third place and one of the automatic promotion berths if they beat visitors Chesterfield on Tuesday night at their Whaddon Road ground and replace Burton Albion.
They will be looking for back-to-back wins to extend their five match unbeaten run which has come at just the right time for The Robins following a lean spell of just one win from a run of seven matches. But wins over Southend United 2-1 away and Saturday’s home win over AFC Wimbledon along with draws against Aldershot Town, Accrington Stanley and Fleetwood Town have kept them in the hunt for promotion along with favourites Gillingham and Port Vale.
Cheltenham’s home record stands at 10-6-2 28/16 and they also have a solid record against teams in the lower half of the division with a 6-4-1 record. Cheltenham have also put together an impressive fifteen match unbeaten run at Whaddon Road which is fast becoming a fortress in League Two with their last defeat there being way back in September last year.
CHESTERFIELD
Visitors Chesterfield also recorded a win at the weekend with a 1-0 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge but let’s not forget that The Daggers have gone four matches without a win recently. In fact the win at Dagenham ended a barren spell of five matches without a win on the road for Chesterfield, but they’ve generally struggled on their travels this season, particularly against the better sides.
Chesterfield’s away record currently stands at 5-5-7 13/17 and their main problem this season has been a distinct lack of goals away from their Proact Stadium; only Torquay United (12 away goals) have a worse return on the road than them in League Two. And when you drill down further, The Spireites have failed to score on seven occasions in their seventeen away matches so far.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
Cheltenham have been very solid at home this season and have proved to be difficult to beat, seeing off the likes of Exeter City (who have the third best away record in the division), Burton Albion and drawing with Port Vale, and they should have too much for a mid-table Chesterfield side with seemingly nothing to play for. I’ll back Cheltenham to win this by a possible 2-1 scoreline.
