BETTING PREVIEW
Newcastle United have added to their squad and will look to continue the strong form they have shown in Europe when they entertain Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkiv for the 1st leg of their tie. The game may well finish with just 1, or even no goals, as Metalist bring a defence that has conceded just 3 goals through the group stages.
Of course, there is the concern that Metalist are not as match fit as Newcastle. The home team continues to play every week in a gruelling Premier League, while Metalist have been off since losing to Vienna back in December. Their winter break lasts 3 months and in the mean time they have to make do with friendlies, and even there they have not impressed.
Newcastle United boast impressive form at home, where they have made the advantage count, picking up 3 wins and a draw from their 4 group games in front of the St. James Park faithful. They have not been beaten at home in Europe since 2005! They are on a fabulous Europa League run of 23 home games without defeat, winning an impressive 18 of those games.
Straight off the bat, I like Newcastle United to win. The prices we are being offered are above fair value so I feel value hunters should take the home win, as Newcastle will want to take a lead back for the 2nd leg, rather than put themselves in a position where they have to defend and try and win away, which won't be easy.
There are a few other bets to look at, such as the cards market. Stats show Metalist were booked less than any other side through the group stages, picking up just 6 yellows, and Newcastle United committed the 3rd least fouls, so we may see a clean game, making a bet on few cards a good selection.
THE BETTING VERDICT
For my bet, I'll stick with Pardew and his men. They are fresh off a very impressive 3-2 win here against Chelsea, and their confidence will be boosted from that result.
Playing in Europe means a lot, and I feel they will give this one their all. Home win.
