Schalke provided us with a winner in the 1st Bundesliga game of 2013, winning an exciting match against Hannover 5-4. The result put an end to the poor run before Christmas, and I'm hoping it continues here, as Schalke have been so good earlier in the season, surely they have sorted it out. There might not be as many goals, but they are certainly better than Augsburg.
Schalke, despite their poor December run, sit 5th with 28 points, way better than Augsburg, who are 17 with just 12. Augsburg too won on the weekend, a quite rare thing. Their 3-2 victory over Dusseldorf, away no less, was just the 2nd win of the 18 game old season. The previous 2 away games had seen them lost 2-0 at Bayern Munich and 2-1 at Stuttgart.
Schalke have already beaten Augsburg this season, winning 3-1 at home. The previous visit here, earlier in 2012 saw them held 1-1, and maybe that, coupled with their poor pre winter break form is the reason we are seeing prices over even money on a Schalke win. There is also the concern from them letting in 4 goals despite beating Hannover.
I don't think we should be concerned. While the defence was not impressive last Friday, the fact is they are facing an offence that has scored just 15 goals all season, 20% of which was scored last weekend! Augsburg might have won too, but they let in 2 goals, so imagine what Schalke can do? They scored 5 goals last weekend, and have 32 for the season, more than double Augsburg's total.
THE BETTING VERDICT
We only need Schalke to outscore Augsburg to win, and I thin the odds are in our favour.
