Saturday 26th January 2013 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
BURTON ALBION
Play-off candidates Burton Albion entertain lowly Barnet at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday but the hosts will be wary of their opponents who have recorded wins over two of the top seven clubs recently in addition to accounting for Capital One Cup finalists Bradford City.
Anyhow, back to Burton for the time being and they currently sit in 7th place but they have Southend United, Fleetwood Town and Bradford City all breathing down their necks on 40 points each. Upon first glance at Burton Albion’s recent results, they’ve produced some mixed returns with defeats against York City and Northampton Town but these were inflicted on their travels, while at home The Brewers have won their last four on the trot.
Victories over Accrington Stanley 1-0, Rochdale 3-2, Southend United 2-0 and Torquay United 2-1 have lifted Burton into play-off contention and they’ll want to stay there for sure. Indeed, Burton’s home form has been solid all season with a record of 9-3-2 30/15 and only third placed Northampton Town (10 wins) have recorded more wins on home turf than them in League Two.
The Brewers have lost just once in their last twelve league matches at the Pirelli Stadium and they have an impressive record at home against teams in the top half of the division with a 6-1-1 19/10 record and their quality should shine through today.
BARNET
Visitors Barnet as mentioned earlier have recorded a few decent results recently with wins over Gillingham 1-0 away, a 2-0 home win over Bradford City and then a 2-0 win at Rotherham United last time out. These results have helped Barnet out of the bottom two and they are now two points ahead of AFC Wimbledon who remain in 23rd place following their 2-2 draw with Port Vale tonight.
Barnet have lost just once in their last six matches and are now unbeaten in their last three on the road but they face a tricky trip to Derbyshire this weekend against a Burton side who’ll want to retain their play-off status. Barnet’s away record stands at 3-3-8 10/21 and their record away from home versus top half teams stands at 3-2-4 9/13 which is still a bit too inconsistent for player-manager Edgar Davids.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
Although Barnet have improved considerably during the last couple of months, I’ll back Burton at home in this one as their quality should just about edge this one – a possible 3-2 win for The Brewers is on the cards along with the distinct possibility of a few goals too.
The Pick :
Burton Albion 3 Barnet 2
