PREVIEW
Paul Lambert badly needs his side to come through in this home game. Aston Villa are just 1 point and a place above the bottom three in the league, having blown their 2-0 lead in the derby against West Brom to only draw, but have a chance at silverware, if they can only get past Bradford. Sounds doable on paper, but that's what we thought before Bradford beat them 3-1 in the home leg!!
The winners of this tie will face either Swansea City or Chelsea, and so far it seems Bradford are the ones most hungry for that chance. Despite being several leagues lower, they have already taken the scalps of Wigan and Arsenal. Their form continued as they won 3-1 to give themselves an amazing chance, and if they can just score a goal here, they will make Villa's job very hard to do.
Bear in mind, while Aston Villa were toiling away at West Brom, Bradford got the weekend off as their match with Port Vale was postponed on account of bad weather. They may have suffered 2 losses since trouncing Villa, but the last match was played on the 13th. One of those losses was in the Football League trophy, where they did not even try as they looked to keep players fit for this match of the season.
Villa have unbackable form at the moment. Since upsetting Liverpool 3-1 back in mid December they have failed to win all but 1 of the next 8 games. That was a narrow 2-1 home win over Ipswich in the FA Cup. Aside from that win, their last 3 home games have seen them lose without scoring, 0-1 to Southampton, 0-3 to Wigan, who are below them in the table, and 0-4 to Spurs. And not that it was a home game, that 8-0 match at Chelsea has to keep the question marks above Villa's defence shining brightly.
BETTING VERDICT
Maybe Villa get it done. They will need to put on an offensive performance of the season. I am going to put my faith in Bradford to do enough offensively to stay in the tie, and most likely be the ones to get to the final.
Villa will surely score against their lower league opponents, but they will likely take advantage and get at least a goal themselves. I have a feeling Lambert's job may well be in danger after they crash out.
The Pick :
Aston Villa 2-1 Bradford
