Aust. A-League
2013-01-01 - Western Sydney Wands vs Melbourne Victory
A Sports Betting Pick by DownUnder
Football : Australia : A-League Tuesday, 1st January 2013
Kick-off 6.00pm (local) 6:00am GMT
Form:
Western Sydney: DWWWL
Home : 3 Wins – 1 Draw – 3 Losses
Melbourne: WWDLW
Away : 3 Wins – 3 Losses
Both teams have managed to amass 10points in their last 5 games, with the Wanderers having a better goals for/against record.
Western Sydney Wanderers (4th)
The Wanderers are on a 4 match unbeaten run, and a win here will see them leapfrog the Victory into 3rd on goal difference.
At the last home game, the Western Sydney Wanderers trounced Adelaide 6-1 and it was Shinji Ono pin point passes that allowed the Wanderers strike force to tear Adelaide apart.
That game more than doubled the goals they had scored at home, and hopefully marks the departure of coach Tony Popovic’s overly defensive tactics.
Popovic made 6 changes for the next away match at Perth, so expect him to incorporate those rested players back into the starting line up for this game. The Victory do leak goals, and if the Wanderers press forward, they should be rewarded.
Melbourne Victory (3rd)
The Victory scored 3 goals against the Newcastle Jets last time out, 2 spectacular goals from Rojas, and 1 from Archie Thompson ( assist from Rojas). If this combination continues to bear fruit, the Victory could be rightly be considered a candidate for taking out the title.
Coach Ange Postecoglou has captain Adrian Leijer back but Mark Milligan is still suspended (throwing a punch) and will be missed. The Victory look for goals, at the expense of defence, and up to now this tactic has been successful.
With the exception of the previous game against the Wanderers, each win has always been by a goal more than the opposition.
Head to Head
There has only been 1 meeting of these teams on 24 November 2012, and though Melbourne finished with ten men, they prevailed with a 2-nil win.
The Betting Verdict
The Victory don't know the word "defend", and will resort to having to match or outscore the Wanderers to get a result this time out.
Luckily for them they have the firepower.
As for the Wanderers, their fan base will be expecting revenge over the Victory, and be praying for a goal-fest just like the last home game.
My prediction is a high scoring draw, or possibly a high scoring away win - and the easiest way to cover both eventualities is to go for the OVER 2.5 GOALS IN THE MATCH bet.
The Pick :
West Sydney Wanderers 2 v 2 Melbourne Victory
