Not a league I normally write about but after Bradford's heroics last week I'm having a look, especially since there's bugger all else on this Friday (apart from the end of the world)...
So, Southend United are in the playoff hunt and have a chance to grab a much needed win here to move up from 6th. After 3 successive draws a win is badly needed to make the push. Chesterfield aren't a poor side, sitting 5th and with a lot more wins in recent games than Southend, but they are shorn of Jack Lester, their leading striker, and that should affect them negatively up front, especially on the road.
What I am encouraged by is the Southend offence. They've scored 35 goals through 22 games, 6 better than Chesterfield. They managed to score 2 goals against a good Bradford defence, and scored 3 in beating Rochdale and 2 against Brentford. They look good for at least a couple here against Chesterfield, and that, in my opinion, should be enough for a win.
Chesterfield's defence have conceded 24 but Southend have done 1 better. That's just a goal a game, and at home that is exactly how much they're allowing, 1 goal per game. Also, Southend have avoided defeat in almost all recent home games (just 3 losses all season) so they are going to be tough to take out. Add in the fact that they have played well but only managed draws in their last 3 matches on the trot, and you have a situation where they are due and well worth the price to get the win.
I think the oddsmaker is giving Chesterfield a lot of respect for their lack of losses in recent games, and taking into consideration Southend's lack of wins, but the play has been good, and the goals have been scored, and at home in a big match like this where both sides have a go, I have to give the nod to the home side.
