English League One
2012-12-21 - Bury vs Shrewsbury Town
A Sports Betting Pick by Lamps
Football : England : League One
Friday 21st December - Kickoff 7:45pm
Bury
Bury lost at Crewe (1-0) at the weekend to keep them on 19 points and that's good enough for second bottom. They need a win soon, the gap to safety is now 3 points so a home win on Friday could see them leave the drop zone before Xmas.
Blackwell's side have played a lot of games recently 4 games since the 8th December due to cup commitments. Unfortunately all 4 games have ended in defeats, 2 in 90 minutes during the league and 2 via penalties. It means having played extra time twice so soon this small squad may be a little fatigued and that's a worry.
At home Bury were 5 unbeaten having won 2 and drawn 3. Which for a side at the bottom is decent enough and promising at the same time. However, Orient came here and won (0-2) last time out and since then there's been the recent cup exits as well.
The last 2 visitors have scored at least 2 here in the league which is a worry. The blank v Orient is their only home blank in 6 so I'm expecting at least 1 Bury goal on Friday. At the other end 1 home clean sheet in 10 is a huge worry and that's why they remain near the foot of the table.
Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury Town beat Carlisle (2-1) in their last league game to sit in 20th place, the all important safety position. With Bury and the chasing pack close to them a win is huge for them here as they could finally get some daylight from the pack.
Turner's side haven't played in as many games as the hosts due to early cup exits and they certainly are better prepared and fitter of the 2 teams. With 1 loss in 5 they are also the more confident and given the other factors it's tough not to fancy them here.
Away from home is the where the problems are for this team. The draw last time out at Crawley (2-2) was their first in 6 ending their 6 game losing run. Their last away win came last season in League Two and it's because of this poor run they find themselves so low in the table.
Both sides have scored in 4 of the last 5 Shrewsbury away games with the hosts scoring in a run of 6 league games now. Bury are not in great shape but this side is struggling away from home and looks set to do so all season.
Betting Verdict
Bury are the odds against favourites which must be priced entirely on the away form of Shrewsbury Town. The hosts have played a lot of games in recent weeks and have lost the last 4 in all competitions however, the home form has been decent.
Bury are much tougher to beat on their own patch in recent weeks whilst Shrewsbury have a dreadful record on their travels. If the visitors didn't have the fitness and preparation edge I would favour the hosts but given the circumstances I can't do so.
The hosts always score at home whilst the visitors always concede. However, Bury are poor at the back with 1 clean sheet at home in 10 with the last 2 visitors scoring 2 each. Shrewsbury have netted in 4 of their last 5 away so against this defence in such a big game I expect them to do so again.
Overs is the play here as I see a winner but not with less than 3 goals scored in the process. Bury need to win to close the gap but might not have much in the tank. The visitors must improve their away record and this looks a perfect opportunity to do so and get that vital first away win.
