WATFORD
Vicarage Road is my next venue as I look at the fortunes of Watford and Barnsley who do battle on Saturday afternoon with the hosts knocking on the door of the play-off pack after some recent impressive displays.
Watford have strung together a six match unbeaten run of late with good wins over Leicester City 2-1, a 6-1 spanking of Leeds United at Elland Road, 2-1 at home against struggling Wolves and an away win at Sheffield Wednesday in midweek with The Hornets winning well in a 4-1 demolition.
Watford have also drawn against form side Millwall and got a point at Blackpool while their home form currently stands at 4-2-3 10/8 they’ve won three of their last four on home soil and they are steadily gaining momentum after a slow start to the season. Their danger players include striker Troy Deeney (6 goals, 2 assists), Matej Vydra (7 goals, 3 assists), Fernando Forestieri (3 goals, 3 assists) and midfielder Mark Yeates (2 goals, 5 assists).
BARNSLEY
Today’s visitors Barnsley are on the downward spiral compared to Watford and they have now gone eight Championship matches without a win and currently find themselves in 20th place just two places and two points above Bristol City who occupy the last relegation spot. The perennial relegation candidates have defied the drop in previous seasons but I wonder if they can continue the fight for the rest of this season?
Barnsley have lost their recent matches against top-half opposition with defeats against Nottingham Forest 1-4, Hull City 0-1, Derby County 0-2, Huddersfield Town 0-1 and Cardiff City 1-2 which doesn’t bode well for their trip to Watford who are pushing for a play-off place.
Barnsley’s away record stands at a poor 2-1-6 10/15 and they haven’t won on their travels for three matches now – their 5-0 win at Birmingham City has since been proved to be a freak result and I can’t see The Tykes getting anything out of this match either.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
Watford are on a roll at the moment and with home advantage they should just be too strong for their opponents today who seem to be lacking any kind of confidence – I’ll go for a 2-0 home win here for Watford.
The Pick :
Watford 2 Barnsley 0
BEST BETTING TIP :
