2012-11-03 - Sunderland vs Aston Villa

A Sports Betting Pick by Gooner

SUNDERLAND v ASTON VILLA
Football : England : Premier League
Saturday 3rd November 2012 - Kickoff 3pm

SUNDERLAND

Sunderland started this season by getting a 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates, and they've continued on in the same vein becoming Premier League draw kings with six draws in eight games and a 1-6-1 record.

A lop-sided draw has seen Sunderland only play three games at home so far, and that has resulted in Sunderland grabbing their only win with a 1-0 victory over Wigan, and a pair of 1-1 draws against Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Manager Martin O'Neill has clearly set out to make Sunderland tough to beat and he has managed that, but the Black Cats have struggled to create much going forward as a result and have scored just six goals - a league low.

Five of their six goals have come from Steven Fletcher, and the other was an own goal by Newcastle's Demba Ba.

Sunderland Team News :
Titus Bramble remains a doubt with a hip problem, but Martin O'Neill has pretty much a full squad to find a way to score goals.

ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa have been poor so far this season, and now sit in 17th spot in the Premier League with just one win in nine league matches.

It's been especially tough for Villa on the road, with four defeats from five games, and only the 1-1 draw at Newcastle United bringing points.

The Villans have gone 13 top-flight away matches without a victory since beating Wolves 3-2 in January (D5, L8), and that run has dropped Aston Villa down to 19th in my spreadsheet form rankings.

Aston Villa Team News :
Aston Villa left-back Joe Bennett returns after a one-match suspension, but midfielder Karim El Ahmadi serves a ban after accumulating five bookings.

Chris Herd and Ciaran Clark are doubts with knee injuries.

THE BETTING VERDICT :

Whilst Sunderland are not scoring many goals, and are drawing a lot of games, I do think that the Black Cats are the most likely winners in this game - and the home win is at least 50% likely.

Given Sunderland's problems in attack they might only score once, but I think that might be enough to win here.
