After losing at Liverpool last weekend the Royals find themselves in 19th place with 3 points. The gap to safety is 2 points so a win could see them move up to as a high as 15th.
McDermott's side have yet to register a win from their 7 games but were on a 2 game unbeaten run before they went to Anfield. Fulham are one of the weaker travellers in the league so maybe they can break their duck here.
At home the side has drawn with Stoke (1-1) and Newcastle (2-2) but Spurs had too much for them and left the Madejski with all 3 points. Reading are know for their attacking play and it's no shock that they have scored in every home game this season.
The Royals have only score more than 1 goal in 1 of their 3 home games and that's not ideal. Even more so when the visitors are averaging 2 a game as Newcastle and Spurs have scored 5 goals here.
Fulham
The Cottagers are up into 8th place following their home win over Villa (1-0). With 13 points Jol's men are just 2 off 4th placed Everton so there's a real incentive to win this game.
Fulham are now 2 unbeaten having drawn at Southampton the previous week in a 2-2 thriller. This team is excellent at home but more often than not poor on their travels. If they can get a balance of form then Fulham could shock the top 6 or 7.
The away form is actually very good for Fulham's standards. 1-1-1 having lost their first game at West Ham (3-0) but then beating Wigan (1-2) and drawing with the Saints.
4 goals in the last 2 aways is encouraging but once again the defence isn't good enough. 6 goals conceded at an average of 3 a piece means this side a bit like Reading needs at least 2 goals just to take a point and that's tough in the long term.
Betting Verdict
Of the 2 sides I prefer Reading here. Fulham are due a regression away from home whilst the Royals should start beating teams on their own patch. However, a policy of mine is not to back a side that's winless until obviously the "learn how to win" therefore I will stick with the goals market.
Over 2.50 goals looks the best play in this game given the defensive frailties of both. As mentioned above Reading are conceding 2 a game at home but have scored in all their games at the Madejski themselves.
Fulham have had 4 straight away games that have gone overs and with them scoring at least 2 in their last 2 I'm expecting an open game of football.
Like the hosts Fulham are shipping goals in with home sides averaging 2 against them. With Reading looking to attack and Fulham not a defensive side I feel we should see at least 3 goals in perhaps a home win.
