Napoli
Napoli’s priorities this season are clear, they don’t care much for Europa League, a competition that is far from being as lucrative as the UCL where Napoli made a good impression last season.
Walter Mazzari rested his most important players against PSV in the midweek, giving some time to impress to players like Rosati, El Kaddouri, Mesto or Fernandez. Apparently they haven’t made much an impression as PSV cruised to a 3-0 victory.
The situation changes when it comes to Serie A, Napoli is yet to lose a match this season, in fact they’ve only dropped two points on their trip to Catania. Lazio and Sampdoria were their latest victims.
San Paolo became a fortress lately, Napoli won their last six home games scoring at least twice in each of those matches. The last team to leave San Paolo unbeaten was Atalanta back in April.
Udinese
Unlike Napoli, coach Francesco Guidolin decided to field his best eleven against Liverpool and the result was impressive with Udinese scoring three goals and securing a prestigious win at Anfield.
Since their opening day 1-4 loss to champions Juventus, Udinese are unbeaten in Seria A, but it’s also true that they’ve only won one game against AC Milan.
Udinese shared points with Siena, Torino and Genoa, having failed to score in their last two games in the competition.
Guidolin used a 3-4-3 formation in Liverpool, but he’ll most likely return to a more defensive 3-5-2 with Di Natale and Renegie in front.
The Betting Verdict
Napoli is breathing on Juventus’ neck, but it’s unlikely to see them taking the lead as Juve will travel to Siena on Sunday where it’s unlikely to see an upset.
But before thinking too much ahead, Napoli will need to win their home game against an Udinese side that beat Liverpool in England on Thursday and they’ll have to do it without captain Paolo Cannavaro who is suspended.
Udinese have kept a clean sheet on four of their last six games on the road, but I doubt they’ll do it again against a Napoli side with so much firepower, a side that scored at least twice in each of their last six games at San Paolo.
I always liked this Udinese side that Guidolin created but I’m afraid Napoli could prove to be too strong here. However, the Friuli may be good for a goal, they should have the chance to catch Napoli on counter attack especially with Cannavaro missing.
