Match Preview :
While Sunderland will be looking for their first league win this season, Wigan will have other ideas as they look to bounce back from the 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United in their last clash.
Sunderland are still unbeaten since the start of the season, but to date they have drawn all four games and will want to end that streak when Wigan arrives at the Stadium of Light. Last weekend they were closing to getting all three points against West Ham but were dashed by a late Kevin Nolan's equaliser.
So no doubt Martin O'Neill will get his boys to remain focused until the final whistle is blown when they face a Wigan side who is just beneath them separated just by goal difference. Wigan have suffered back to back defeats since they were beaten by Fulham 2-1 at home and that was followed up by a 4-0 defeat against the Red Devils at Old Trafford last weekend. That defeat put them closer to the relegation zone now.
But in midweek they got back to winning ways when they beat Weat Ham 4-1 in the Capital One Cup and Martinez will be urging his boys to carry that run into their Premiership match with the Black Cats.

Sunderland boss O'Neill will make a late decision on winger Adam Johnson prior to kickoff. The 25-year-old was used as a substitute in the 2-0 Capital One Cup victory at MK Dons on Tuesday evening after recovering from a thigh problem but was missing from training on Thursday and will be assessed again before kick-off even though fresh scans showed no further damage.
Defender Carlos Cuellar and midfielder Sebastian Larsson, who both did not feature in midweek with hamstring injuries, have returned to training and could figure, but skipper Lee Cattermole starts a three-match ban following the fifth red card and Phil Bardsley (ankle) and Wes Brown (knee) are still short of match-fitness.

Martinez revealed before the match against West Ham that places in the Wigan starting eleven is not guaranteed, and he will have been delighted with the response from some of his youngsters in the side. Mauro Boselli will certainly start after his double goals in midweek while the likes of Ryo Miyaichi and Callum McManaman will also be hoping to feature. Antolin Alcaraz is not quite ready to return in defence following a groin injury, while the game comes too soon for striker Franco Di Santo who is still out with a calf injury.
