Rock bottom Southampton are the only side that is pointless in the Premier League. 4 defeats from 4 is harsh on the side as Adkin's men have performed in 3 of the 4 games but have come away with absolutely nothing.
Saints lost 2 heart breakers to City and United both 3-2 despite leading 2-1 going into the last 10 in both. Wigan were very much second best at St Marys but they took their chances whilst Southampton were wasteful as Athletic left with 3 points in a 2-0 win. Then finally last weekend we can safely say that Adkins got it all wrong with his high line at the Emirates as Arsenal crushed them 6-1.
In 4 games the opponents have scored 3,3,2 and 6 which isn't great. Needing at least 2 goals to take a point in any league let alone this one is asking way to much.
At St Marys we have seen 2 very good displays as mentioned above. Saints were 1-0 then 2-1 up against United but the legs went late on and United even missed a penalty in this one. The Wigan game was all Saints and the bonus is the side created chances. If they repeat this performance but actually put some away 3 points could be on the cards.
Aston Villa
13th place Villa have 4 points from 4 and now that they have their first win Lambert will be hoping they kick on. Away to a struggling side may just be ideal opponents for Villa and they must be looking at taking points in this one.
Villa lost at West Ham (1-0) on opening day and then to Everton (1-3). The first point came in a 1-1 away draw at Newcastle which was impressive. Finally that elusive win came last time around against Swansea in another good performance.
Villa's away record is a big problem that Lambert must address. The Midlands side are winless in 10 road games having not won since January of this year!
The goal at Newcastle was their first in 5 as the club has been shut out 4 times on the road. A positive is that they have kept things reasonably tight keeping West Ham and Newcastle to just 1 goal. Southampton's poor form may play into Villa's hands if the home side get frustrated the longer they go without scoring.
Betting Verdict
Southampton are favourites here and I don't agree with that. Yes their performances agaisnt City and United were brilliant but Arsenal tore them apart. Adkins is an attacking manager but going all out won't always work in this division. Lambert is getting his Villa side to tick and it's just a matter of time that they break their away duck.
The longer the Saints go without winning the tougher it will be in this league and I think that helps Villa this weekend. I envisage a tight first half as Villa look to keep things tight and then this will open up in the second half.
In a game where all 3 results are very much possible I will back time of first goal 27th minute or over. After conceding very early last weekend Adkins won't want a shootout early doors and Lambert's side are hardly goal machines away from home themselves. At evens I like this one to start slowly and eventually warm up after the break.
