Newly promoted Sampdoria offered the first big shock in Seria A defeating giants Milan at Sansiro thanks to second half goal from left-back Costa.
This is a huge boost for a side that’s objective is to avoid relegation, but coach Ciro Ferrara warns his team that Siena will give them a hard time.
Sampdoria will be looking to clean the slate after finishing their previous season in Seria A offering lots of disappointing games to their fans, losing six of their last seven home matches in Italy’s top flight.
Sampdoria were given a one-point deduction but they are already back in the black after the victory over last season’s runners-up AC Milan.
Siena
Siena still has a long way to leave the bottom of the table in Serie A despite opening their campaign with a draw against Torino. They were given a six points deduction which means that after one game they are still at minus five.
Top scorer Mattia Destro (12 goals last season for Siena) has signed a five year contract with AS Roma this summer and moved on loan with the mandatory buy-out clause of 7m euros.
Siena’s offensive strength has been reduced considerably with this move, both their strikers (Calaio and Bogdani) are in their thirties and is likely to assume that they are not in their best form of their career.
Losing Destro and starting the season with a six points deficit could be too much for a Siena side that hasn’t spent a lot this summer to strengthen the squad.
The Betting Verdict
Siena will be eager to cancel out the six points deduction imposed on the club for match-fixing and that may lead to some mistakes from Cosmi’s side.
Sampdoria on the other side should be full of enthusiasm after their impressive win against Milan, as should be their fans who’ll see Seria A football after a long season in Serie B.
Ciro Ferrara will have the task to keep his players focused as this game against Siena is even more important than the one against Milan since they will be playing against a rival in the race for survival.
Sampdoria has a lot of quality in front, but it will be interesting to see how Ferrara will manage to find a place for both Maxi Lopez and Eder in the starting line-up as both strikers have the same profile.
