The Croatian champions eased through the play-offs after a convincing tie against Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova (5-0 on aggregate).

Dinamo Zagrab is now one step away from securing back-to-back group appearances in the Champions League. The last time didn’t turn out too well, they’ve finished the group stages without collecting a point.

Dinamo sold Milan Badelj to Hamburger SV for 4 millions this summer, but apart from that the squad is pretty much the same, it’s the squad that won the title in Croatia with a difference of 21 points. It was Dinamo’s 14th title in Croatia.

NK Maribor (Sloveni)

Maribor’s only previous group stage appearance was in 1999 and followed a 3-0 aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais.

The Slovenian champions booked their place in the play-offs with comfortable aggregate victories against both F91 Dudelange (Luxembourg) and Zeljeznicar (Bosnia).

Dinamo Zagreb however will be of another caliber, the teams they’ve met so far were mediocre to be honest.

Maribor qualified for the Europa League group stage in the previous season after eliminating Glasgow Ranger in the play-offs, but they’ve lost all their away games and finished fourth with only one point.

The Betting Verdict

I have to say that top seeded Dinamo Zagreb should consider themselves lucky with this draw, I can’t imagine Maribor being a huge obstacle in their way to the Champions League group stages. Dinamo have actually won all five previous two-legged contests with Slovenian rivals.

Dinamo is especially strong at home, they have fantastic supporters and if the stadium will be full, I expect the atmosphere to overwhelm Maribor.

There is an obvious difference in value between these two, Maribor lost with regularity on the road when meeting a decent side in Europe and I can’t see why would that change against Dinamo.
