It’s a trip up north to Cleethorpes next as we look at the progress of Grimsby Town and league newcomers Nuneaton as they do battle at Blundell Park on Saturday afternoon.
Grimsby Town
Hosts Grimsby Town have not enjoyed the best of starts to their new campaign with just one point out of the possible first six on offer. A first day of the season 1-1 draw at Southport wasn’t a bad result, but this was promptly followed by an unexpected 1-2 reverse at the hands of Stockport County at home in midweek.
However, the Mariners had arguably their three best influential attacking players on the bench for that match with Louis Soares, striker Liam Hearn and Anthony Elding only making second half appearances and couldn’t avoid the defeat.
The good news (for Grimsby and my pick for today) is that Hearn has declared himself ‘raring to go’ and with Soares and Elding set to start also with Craig Disley pulling the strings in midfield, they have a great chance to notch their first win of the season against a leaking Nuneaton defence.
Nuneaton Town
Onto the visitors then, and Nuneaton had a fantastic season last term gaining promotion from the Blue Square North and manager Kevin Wilkin would no doubt have had high hopes with their return to the non-league top flight.
However, two matches into the new season in the Premier and the stark reality has hit home very hard with Town losing narrowly to Ebbsfleet United 4-5 in a nine-goal thriller in the season-opener, but then fell foul of an improved Newport County 0-4 in midweek.
The early indications are that this could be a long, tough season for them but thegood news for Nuneaton is that they do know how to score goals; in their last 21 competitive matches, Nuneaton have failed to score just twice and with a tally of 38 goals on the road last season (behind only to Halifax, Altrincham and Hinckley), they are very capable of troubling the scorers against most of the teams in this division too.
The Betting Verdict :
With both clubs desperate to record their first win of the season, I’m sensing the opportunity to back the Over here, particularly given Nuneaton’s defence that has yielded 9 goals in their opening two matches.
A 3-1 win for The Mariners could be a possible scoreline.
