Matt Cain is about to make his first start since throwing a perfect game, only the 22nd in the history of MLB and the 2nd by a pitcher this season! That is a hard feat to top and it is not unusual to have a stinker in the next game, much as Humber did earlier. It does not help that the Angels have been getting some great pitching from their men too, so I feel the home underdogs are the way to go today.
The Giants have right-handed Matt Cain looking to improve his 8-2 record and 2.18ERA. Cain has now won 7 straight starts, including the last one which was a perfect game. His last 4 starts have seen him give up just 2 earned runs and he has walked just 16 batters in 95 innings, while striking out 96! All sounds well and good, but San Francisco come here having dropped their last 2 games overall. Cain isn't going to win this game for his team singlehandedly.
Remember, while Cain has been solid at home, his road starts have seen him compile a 3.23ERA in 6 away games.
The Angels counter with Jerome Williams, who is 6-4 with a 4.20ERA. He will have high motivation facing Cain, but also because he is at home and off 2 straight losses. He will also have the extra motivation of having a point to prove against the Giants, who were the team that drafted him way back in 1999.
Like Cain, his form is much different at home than it is away. In 6 home starts this term he has a 2.93ERA, with a 5-1 record that inspires confidence.
BETTING VERDICT
The public will be all over the Giants, who have seen their price go up but are still favourites as the public continue to bet more than wiseguys are. The Angels are underdogs, but there is a reason why they are not priced over even money. Take the home team.
