Boston have now lost 3 games in a row, falling 2-1 yesterday against the visiting Orioles. They could well get swept today, but I am looking at the total, which looks a tad high.
Baltimore have now won 7 straight games against Boston in Fenway Park. They send out Brian Matusz this evening, owner of a 5-5 mark and a 4.41ERA. However, he has been improving even more recently.
Matusz's last start saw him give up just 1 run on 2 hits in over 7 innings of work against Tampa Bay, who can hit! His last 3 starts have seen him compile a 2.29ERA, and that is what we should be looking at, not his overall numbers. All of his last 3 starts went Under.
Boston counter with Clay Buchholz, who is 5-2 with a 6.58ERA. Looks ugly but look closer. His last 2 starts have both been solid, with both games going Under. Tampa Bay were restricted to just 2 runs over 7 innings of work and he then kept the Toronto Blue Jays to just 2 runs over 8 innings. He is a lot more solid at the moment than his overall numbers suggest.
I have this game finishing with a total of about 7 or 8, 9 at a push. That extra bit on the spread makes this a good play as both sides will fight hard to gain/avoid the sweep.
