Ridiculous way to lose a bet and a game yesterday, as Detroit had led for all of the game, until their closer blew it late. It ended 3-2 despite Doug Fister pitching a beaut against his former side, and Detroit will now send their ace to the mound to square things up.
The Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the hill today. He is 2-1 with a 2.38ERA, and in over 45 innings of work he has struck out 42 while walking just 9. He comes into this having given up 2 runs against Kansas City on Wednesday. Verlander has been unfortunate not to get more run support from his team, or he would have a better record, but a 2.38ERA is solid enough, especially compared to his opposite number.
The Mariners have now won 5 straight games against Detroit, and send out Kevin Millwood to keep the run going. His own numbers aren't too great though, 0-3 with a 5.34ERA. On Thursday, Millwood was hammered for 4 runs in 6 innings by Tampa Bay. What's worse is that all the runs were scoring in 1 inning, where he walked a batter and gave up 5 hits, leading to the runs. Control is an issue and getting himself in a jam is going to be a concern here. I should point out too that at home Milwood has an ERA of 10.61!
The Mariners may have won yesterday, but they were kept totally off the scoreboard until the very end, and should struggle to put up runs today against Verlander. Remember, Seattle also got beaten in that perfect game earlier this season when Humber pitched against them. This is a side that can be kept shut.
BETTING VERDICT
I'm going to go with Detroit again today as this run has to end sometime and with a pitching mismatch it most probably will happen today.
