Both the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres come together in Petco Park to begin a series on the back of a terrible set of results. The Rockies and the Padres just got swept and are both 0-3 in recent games. At least one of these teams will get back to a win, but it's not going to be easy. Runs here will be at a premium.
Colorado were rocked for 29 runs by Atlanta over 3 games, losing all. They will have better luck here as Petco Park is a park made for pitchers, and it helps that the Padres rank 2nd from last in the NL in scoring! The Rockies are going with Drew Pomeranz, who is 0-1 with a 4.05ERA, although I think that ERA is misleading here when considering the total.
Pomeranz did well in his last start, giving up just 1 run in almost 7 innings against the Dodgers. He did not get the win but that's his bullpens fault, as he allowed just 4 hits. Pomeranz's ERA is just 2.30 in his last 3 starts, and we have to take into account his improved play.
The Padres send out Edinson Volquez, who is very unlucky to still be 0-2 as he has a 2.92ERA. Volquez too has improved as the season has progressed. His last 3 starts see his ERA drop to just 1.80, as he blanked the Milwaukee Brewers through 7 innings in his last start. He did not get the win as no one in his team managed to score either, until he had left, so did not get a win. As you can see, not only can they keep the scoring down, they will be unable to score themselves.
BETTING VERDICT
The total looks low, and my only concern is the bullpen. However, the price looks good enough, and there is enough movement in favour of my opinion so I will take the Under before it drops further. Expect a pitchers duel.
