PREVIEW
League leaders Manchester United could have pulled right away from Manchester City but faltered against a determined Wigan side that beat them 1-0. The Devils have since bounced right back and beat Aston Villa 4-0 in their last match. I don't see them slipping up here, even tough Everton will probably give them a much closer game.
The history is on Uniteds side in this fixture because they have beaten Everton 29 times now, joint most by one team against a single opponent. The last time Everton won here was 1992, in the first season of the Premier League. Since then they have lost 15 and drawn 3 matches here. The last 7 meetings between them at Old Trafford have een Everton score just 2 goals combined, and they have failed to score in the last 3 trips here. Last season United won 1-0, the same score by which they beat Everton earlier this season at Goodison.
United may have dropped all 3 points at Wigan, but at home they have been fantastic, winning 7 straight and keeping 6 clean sheets, with just 1 goal conceded. United have also scored in 47 straight home games, a new record on which they can further improve.
Everton can still finish above Liverpool if they get the results, but they are likely to still be upset from last weekend. The Toffees led Liverpool 1-0 but blew it in the 2nd half by not finishing the Reds off and they ending up crashing out. That is a tough loss to take, and to have it happen against Liverpool, who are not in great form themselves, will be very difficult to swallow.
One of the obvious bets to look at is Wayne Rooney scoring first or at any time in the match, as he had netted the most for United this season. However, the ex-Everton striker has just 2 goals in 11 meetings against Everton, and it is Hernandez who has netted in both of the most recent meetings.
BETTING VERDICT
Very tempting to take Rooney to score first but I feel Everton may well give United a game. There is a chance of United winning by a 2 goal margin but with the way the last 2 meetings went I see it finishing either 1-0 or 2-1 to United. So, let's have a gamble and take United to win by a 1 goal margin.
Of course now Rooney will score first and United win by more...
