As we saw on Friday evening, the lower divisions can start well if they give it a good old go against Premier League clubs, and Birmingham, at home, look well placed to take advantage of a great situation here.

Birmingham City recently won a cup competition, the Carling Cup, back in February and they are at home to Wolves, who lie near the bottom of the Premier League tables.

Birmingham are likely to field a strong side to pull the upset and earn more much needed money from further ties in the FA Cup, while Wolves will have their minds full with concerns to simply stay in the top flight come the end of the season.

With no wins in their last 6 league matches, I think Wolves will struggle against Birmingham, who have not been beaten domestically on their own patch this season.

McCleish was replaced by Hughton and under him Birmingham boast the best home defence in their league. In 11 home games, Brum have conceded just 5 goals, and have 6 clean sheets!

The main reason for favouring Birmingham has to be the way Mick McCarthy is set to go about this in terms of team selection.

McCarthy has previously made heavy changes to line-ups for games he does not consider important and with his priority being Premier League survival he will likely rest a whole host of first teamers. With good reason too, as poor Wolves must be knackered, having played as many as 3 games in 6 days recently, that too against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea!

BETTING VERDICT

I'm thinking a lay of some sort against Wolves is the way to go here. The oddsmakers are aware of this too, as taking Birmingham with just +0.25 start drops the price to 1.50 when the win is priced at over 2.40

So, I'll suggest 2 bets here, which you may consider taking based on the risk/reward you want to take.
