There is just a point separating these two sides as Liverpool takes on Newcastle on Friday evening at Anfield. No doubt the focus will be on Andy Carroll as he takes on his former side after his moved from Tyneside in a club record 35 million pounds fee but has since failed to make an impact with injuries and poor form restricting him to just five goals this season.
Newcastle though have brought in Demba Ba, and has arrived on a free transfer has been a sensation with the club. And having scored 14 league goals to his name this season, the in-form Senegal international is an early contender for this term's golden boot award, with only Arsenal hitman Robin van Persie topping him in the scoring charts.
So should Carroll start then Carroll and Ba are set to go head to head that is if he figures in Dalglish plans since having failed to make back-to-back league starts since the beginning of November. However, with star frontman Luis Suarez suspended, Dalglish could turn to Carroll to lead the line against his old employers. Carroll started the Reds' Boxing Day visit of Blackburn but could not make an impact as the match ended 1-1. And wih Liverpool winnin only two of their last six games, it put a dent on their hopes for a place in Europe.
Newcastle meanwhile ended a six match winless run when they beat Bolton 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium. If they were to win this match they would go above Liverpool and start the New Year in sixth position. However the omens are not good as Liverpool have won 14 and lost none of their last 16 Premier League encounters against the Toon at Anfield .Newcastle have also failed to score in their last five Premier League visits to Anfield, something which they will hope to change Friday night.

Liverpool's striking ace Suarez is unavailable for the clash as he serves a one-match suspension for improper conduct, which means Carroll is likely to start. Captain Steven Gerrard returned from a two-month absence with a substitute appearance on Boxing Day, but is again expected to be on the bench.
Newcastle Team News :
Newcastle striker Ba will be fit to take his place in the side after shrugging off a knock to his knee suffered on Boxing Day.
Full-back Davide Santon, who missed out at the Reebok Stadium with a knee problem, is fit and Dan Gosling is set to return after completing his three match suspension.
Danny Guthrie, Sylvain Marveaux (both groin), Peter Lovenkrands (calf) and Steven Taylor (Achilles) remain out of this clash.
