Football – England – FA Cup 2nd Round Replay
Tuesday 13th December 2011 – Kickoff: 1945hrs
League One Walsall take on League Two Dagenham & Redbridge in their FA Cup second round replay at the Bescot Stadium with the midlanders now favourites to progress through to the next round.
Walsall
Walsall have lost just once in their last seven matches in all competitions with a first round FA Cup win over Exeter City amongst five draws of which their 1-1 draw against League One leaders Charlton Athletic was the most impressive. The Saddlers have indeed won just once in League One in their last fifteen matches but recent results indicate that they could be improving.
The Walsall home record stands at 2-4-5 10/15, and the draw against Charlton stemmed a run of three straight defeats following losses to Exeter City, MK Dons and Bury. But they did earn a draw at high-flying Stevenage 0-0 on the road which will also give them heart.
The familiar trio of Jonathan Macken (4 goals), William Grigg and Alex Nicholls (3 goals each) are the most likely to register on the scoresheet. I apologise if I may seem to be contradicting myself recently regarding Walsall, but it’s horses for courses and tonight’s opposition are sitting joint-bottom of League Two.
Dagenham & Redbridge
Which brings me nicely onto Dagenham & Redbridge – the League Two basement club are currently suffering a horrendous run of form in their division with nine straight losses, and indeed have won just once in their last sixteen League Two matches.
Needless to say their away record isn’t too flash standing at 2-0-7 6/16, and are the league’s lowest goalscorers away from home. It’s a long time since they recorded their back-to-back away wins at the beginning of the season at Macclesfield and Bradford City, but since then The Daggers have lost the last seven road matches straight.
Striker Jon Nurse (4 goals, 1 assist) is their leading scorer, and has been assisted by midfielder Oliver Lee (3 goals) while creativity has been supplied by Damien McCrory (4 assists) and Gavin Tomlin (5 assists).
The Betting Verdict :
With that all said, Walsall definitely hold the upper hand here with taking points off Charlton and Stevenage recently, while Dagenham’s losing streak has continued.
I’m backing Walsall to inflict yet another defeat upon the Essex outfit; 1-0 to the hosts in an uninspiring encounter.
The Pick :
Walsall 1-0 Dagenham
