Football – England – League Two
Friday 9th December 2011 – Kickoff: 1945hrs
Play-off hopefuls Torquay United take on improving Barnet on Friday night at Plainmoor and will be hoping for all three points to take them within a whisker of the play-off places – if they win by 4 goals or more tonight they displace Gillingham on goal difference.
Torquay United
After an indifferent September and a disastrous early October where Torquay lost three of their first four matches in that month (0-1 at Bradford City and 1-4 at Southend United, and a home loss to Gillingham 2-5), The Gulls have now put together a five match unbeaten run to set them back on course for a play-off place.
Recent home wins over AFC Wimbledon 4-0, Hereford United 2-0 and fierce rivals Plymouth Argyle 3-1 along with a 3-0 away win at Crewe means Torquay are now building a bit of momentum.
Their home record stands at 4-4-2 23/17, and other than Crawley Town (24 goals), they are the highest scorers at home in League Two – and with a host of attacking options at their disposal such as striker Rene Howe (7 goals, 3 assists), midfielder Lee Mansell (6 goals, 3 assists), Billy Bodin (4 goals, 1 assist) and Eunan O’Kane (4 goals, 6 assists), it is no surprise.
Torquay will also want to get back to winning ways at home in League Two following their 2-3 loss at Sheffield United in the FA Cup last weekend.
Barnet
Tonight’s visitors, Barnet, have also improved of late with a draw at AFC Wimbledon and back-to-back wins over Bristol Rovers and Macclesfield Town which has seen them pull away from immediate relegation danger.
However, their away form still remains patchy with a record of 2-2-5 11/18, with only Plymouth, Rotherham and Northampton conceding more goals than them on the road. In addition, they’ve performed poorly against sides in the top seven; 0-4 at Swindon Town and 2-3 at Shrewsbury Town, and could be heading the same way at Torquay.
Bees striker Izale McLeod (12 goals, 1 assist) is their obvious dangerman, but midfielder Ricky Holmes (4 goals, 1 assist) and Mark Marshall (1 goal, 4 assists) will also need to be monitored closely.
The Betting Verdict :
If Torquay can keep McLeod quiet and cut out the supply to him then they should run out comfortable winners in this one.
Torquay United to win 2-0 as a score line.
The Pick :
Torquay United 2-0 Barnet
