QPR
The highs that came with Tony Fernandes' takeover of the club seem to have dissipated in recent weeks and QPR have once again realised they are still in a tough spot regardless of some marquee signings being made by Neil Warnock before the transfer window closed until January. They now face their 2nd West London Derby of the season and hope for a much better show than the 6-0 defeat they suffered against Fulham.
QPR are 11th in the Premier League table, having gained 9 points so far and compiling a 2-3-3 record from their early games. However, they have really struggled at Loftus Road where they are 0-3-1, scoring just 2 goals and conceding 6.
Since losing 0-4 to Bolton here on the opening day, Rangers have drawn their last 3 Premier League home games, although they should have got more from games against Newcastle, Aston Villa and Blackburn and this is their toughest home game of the season so far. QPR have only scored more than 1 goal in 1 of their 8 League games this season.
Danny Gabbidon is hoping to return to the squad after missing 3 games with an injury, but Neil Warnock will be missing DJ Campbell for the next few weeks. Matt Connolly is back in the squad for this game.
Chelsea
Chelsea absolutely dominated Genk from start to finish in their Champions League game on Wednesday and they should not have expended too much energy for this game on Sunday afternoon. Depending on the result from the Manchester Derby earlier in the day, Chelsea may even be in a position to move just 1 point off the top of the table.
The Blues are 3rd in the Premier League, picking up 19 points from their first 8 games of the season and sitting just 3 points behind Manchester City in 1st place. They have looked strong at compiled a 2-1-1 record away from home, scoring 8 goals and conceding 5, making them the joint 3rd highest scorers away from home in the League so far.
Chelsea have won 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions and seem to be free-scoring at the moment. They have scored 18 goals in those 5 games, including 5 in a win at Bolton in their last away game in the League. They have won 2 of their 5 away games in all competitions this season, but they were minutes away from winning at Valencia and the only defeat they suffered came at Manchester United.
Fernando Torres scored 2 goals against Genk during the week, but completes his suspension from domestic competition so Didier Drogba is likely to lead the line. Ramires is the only other doubt in the squad as Andre Villa-Boas leads his team into their first West London Derby of the season.
Head to Head
Chelsea and QPR have met twice in recent seasons in cup competitions, both games being won by Chelsea and both taking place at Stamford Bridge.
The last time they met at Loftus Road came in the 1995/96 season, with Chelsea winning here 1-2.
Prediction
This looks a tough test for QPR who will be missing DJ Campbell, likely their best forward in the squad, as goals continue to be a problem for Rangers that have plenty of players that can create chances.
A lack of goals does not bode well for their chances against a Chelsea team that is scoring plenty of goals at the moment and come in having a confidence boosting win over Genk that has put them in a very strong position to qualify from their Champions League Group.
With one team struggling to put the ball in the back of the net, while the other is scoring plenty, I can only pick Chelsea to win this game on the Asian Handicap which has been set at 1.25 goals.
I expect QPR will make life tough, but they are not the best defensively and I think Chelsea will eventually be too strong for them and should be able to win this by a couple of goals. There seems to be enough creativity and magic in this Chelsea team to expect them to create chances, while players are scoring goals whether that be Frank Lampard, Raul Meireles or Daniel Sturridge.
It should be an entertaining game, and I will take Chelsea to win well and cover.
