Football – England – League Two
Saturday 8th October 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Rock-bottom Plymouth Argyle take on visitors Accrington Stanley at Home Park on Saturday afternoon, some three points adrift of Bradford City in the early stages of the season.
Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth have made a horrendous start to their new League Two campaign with just one win and picking up a total of just 4 points out of the first 33 on offer. The Pilgrims have suffered nine straight defeats so far with their one win coming against Macclesfield 2-0 at the end of September.
The Pilgrims’ home record therefore does not make for good reading 1-0-4 3/9, with only fellow strugglers Hereford United and Aldershot Town (2 home goals apiece) scoring fewer on home soil.
On that point, there isn’t too much to write home about when the goals-for topic is mentioned; midfielder Will Atkinson (2 goals) leads the charts, with just three others registering a goal apiece.
I have previously mentioned the loss of former striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, but this really has left a void that as yet has not been filled, and this is really hurting them in the attacking stakes.
Accrington Stanley
Visitors Accrington Stanley have not exactly set the world on fire so far this season either though as they travel to Home Park still looking for their first win on the road.
But recent results suggest that Stanley are in better shape than today’s hosts as they’ve lost just once in their last seven matches.
This improved run has seen them record wins over Burton Albion 2-1 and Aldershot Town 3-2, whilst gaining valuable points at Barnet, Oxford United and Gillingham.
Accrington Stanley's away record looks like this; 0-4-1 3/6, and whilst only Hereford and Plymouth (2 goals apiece) possess a worst away goalscoring record, that could all change come Saturday.
Stanley aren’t exactly flush with goals either but forward Wes Fletcher (2 goals), Peter Murphy and Sean Hessey (both with 2 goals) have notched so far, while assists have been provided by eight different players, showing they have creative outlets from all parts of the pitch.
The Betting Verdict :
In summary, Plymouth have been dreadful and their confidence is fragile to say the least, and I think Accrington have the ability to at least gain a draw here, and may well just walk away with all three points given Plymouth’s short-comings both in attack and defence – Accrington to take it 1-0.
The Pick :
Plymouth 0-1 Accrington
