2011-10-08 - Sheffield Wednesday vs Chesterfield

Football – England – League One
Saturday 8th October 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Sheffield Wednesday take on newcomers Chesterfield at Hillsborough on Saturday, and if they take all three points, could lift themselves into second place depending on other results.
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons remain the only teams in the division to have a 100% home record, with Wednesday’s home record standing at a perfect 5-0-0 13/4, with only Hartlepool United (2) and Tranmere Rovers (3), conceding fewer goals.
The Owls go into this match full of confidence having won their last three matches on the trot; away wins at Yeovil Town and Hartlepool were sandwiched with a solid 3-0 home win over Exeter City, while at home they’ve won all five straight. Within this great home start they’ve beaten Notts County and second placed MK Dons.
Striker Gary Madine (9 goals, 1 assist) is their leading scorer, but has been assisted with goals from nine other players! Creativity and assists have also been in abundance through Jose Semedo (3 assists), Ben Marshall (3 assists), Julian Bennett (2 goals, 2 assists), along with five others providing 1 assist each.
The Owls are strongly tipped for automatic promotion and if they can continue their early home form, along with solid away performances, there is enough depth in the squad to suggest that they could go all the way this season.
Chesterfield
New boys Chesterfield, like Stevenage, have started okay and manager John Sheridan’s sole aim will be to keep them in this division this season with a view perhaps to a play-off finish next season. They’ve adapted adequately at home, but it’s their away form that is an early cause for concern.
The Spireites away form reads 1-0-4 7/12, have suffered back-to-back defeats against leaders Charlton Athletic 3-1 away and a disappointing home loss to Colchester United 0-1 last weekend. Overall though, their record on the road has been disappointing with heavy losses at Charlton and MK Dons (2-6), with their only win coming at struggling Bournemouth 3-0.
So, a trip to Sheffield Wednesday who are gunning for promotion is not an ideal springboard on which to launch their attempts to pull away from the relegation zone.
Forward Leon Clarke (5 goals, 1 assist) is their leading scorer, along with fellow frontmen Danny Whitaker & Craig Westcarr (2 goals, 2 assists each), who accounted for a total of 27 goals between them last season (Westcarr – 12 for Notts County).
Young forward Jordan Bowery has contributed with 2 assists, but the problems have never been scoring goals for Chesterfield, rather, conceding them which has been apparent in this campaign.
The Betting Verdict :
The Spireites have conceded in four of their five away matches so far. Whilst Chesterfield will pose an attacking threat, I believe their leaky defence and Sheffield Wednesday’s experience and know-how will win over in this one – Wednesday to win 3-1.
The Pick :
Sheffield Wed 3-1 Chesterfield
