Football – England – League One
Saturday 8th October 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Carlisle United host fellow mid-table occupants Brentford at their Brunton Park ground on Saturday afternoon with both sides looking to edge closer to the top six.
Carlisle United
Carlisle have returned some mixed results lately with a 2-1 away win at Tranmere Rovers and a home victory over Stevenage 1-0, sandwiched between losses against Hartlepool United and a 1-4 loss at Chesterfield. Their last outing ended in a 1-1 draw at Walsall, so their form is a little hard to predict.
The Cumbrians’ home record stands at 2-0-3 5/9, with their recent win over Stevenage the first time they’ve kept a clean sheet at home so far, whilst previously shipping 3 goals against Notts County and MK Dons. Goals at the right end have been hard to come by with only Bournemouth & Oldham Athletic (4 goals apiece), scoring fewer at home to date.
Forward Lee Miller (5 goals) is their leading scorer, midfielder James Berrett ( 2 goals, 1 assist) and free-kick taking defender Matt Robson (1 goal, 2 assists) the only highlights so far. I’m sure manager Greg Abbott will be keen for creative midfielder Jon-Paul McGovern to replicate the form he showed for Swindon Town a couple of seasons ago where he supplied no fewer than 17 assists.
Brentford
Visitors Brentford will also be keen to get their early season form back on track following a couple of recent setbacks; The Bees have won just once in their last four matches following an impressive start to the season where they won five out of their first seven matches.
Curiously, similar to their opponents today Brentford have performed better on the road so far which is evident in their away stats to date; 4-0-1 6/3, which is a good record considering they lost their first match on the road 0-2 at Sheffield United who are strongly tipped for automatic promotion.
The Bees won their next four on the trot with wins at Exeter City, Walsall, Wycombe Wanderers and Oldham Athletic. The last three, keeping a clean sheet and it’s worth noting that they possess the best defensive record away from home along with Sheffield United.
Striker Clayton Donaldson (3 goals, 1 assist) leads the way, along with Niall McGinn (2 goals, 2 assists), Myles Weston (1 goal, 3 assists) and Sam Saunders (2 goals, 4 assists). They will no doubt be keen to erase their last league result which was a resounding 0-4 loss at home to Huddersfield last weekend, with Wednesday night’s League Trophy 3-0 away win at Charlton Athletic going some way to make amends.
The Betting Verdict :
I believe Brentford have the edge in terms of creative sparks, along with a solid defensive record away from home and I’ll take them with the round ball handicap in this one. Brentford may just nick it 2-1.
The Pick :
