Kenny Dalglish will be making his first appearance as Liverpool manager at Goodison Park since leaving the club 2 days after an epic 4-4 draw at this stadium against Everton in the FA Cup in February 1991. This time, he will be hoping for a better end result in the first Merseyside Derby of the season.

Liverpool moved back up to 5th in the Premier League table thanks to a 2-1 win at Anfield over Wolves last week. They have gained 10 points so far this season, 6 less than both Manchester clubs, but the aim for the side is to get into the Champions League places. Liverpool are 1-0-2 away from home this season, scoring 2 goals and conceding 5.

The Reds have managed to win their last 2 games back to back since getting hammered 4-0 at Tottenham in the League. Liverpool won their last away game at Brighton in the Carling Cup, but come into this match having lost back to back away games in the League without scoring a goal in either game.

Glen Johnson is out until after the international break at the earliest, while Dan Agger is expected to miss out after suffering a rib injury at Spurs. Steven Gerrard has returned to the squad, but I am not sure Liverpool are prepared to risk him for the full 90 minutes just yet.

Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 here last season, stopping a run of 3 consecutive home defeats to their closest and most disliked rivals.

The Toffees have beaten Liverpool in the FA Cup in that time, but that was thanks to an extra time goal.

Prediction

I really liked the option for one or both of these sides not to score in the game up at 2.20 at Stan James, but after studying the recent form of both sides, I think we will see goals in this game.

Both defences have struggled to keep the opposition out in recent games, with Everton conceding at least 1 goal in all 5 games played at home in all competitions, and Liverpool conceding in their last 4 away games in all competitions since keeping a clean sheet at Arsenal.

With that being said, I think both teams are better going forwards, especially now Everton will have the services of Tim Cahill at the weekend, while Liverpool have some players that can really make the difference in Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard.

I did consider the game to end in a stalemate, but I think the recent history suggests we will see a winner... I just expect it may come after a few goals have gone in.
